Talk of Love and Win with Nokia Maps!

It is that time of the year where we are going to officially celebrate love – Valentines Day is just around the corner! When we talk about love, can epic love stories be far behind? From Romeo & Juliet to Layla & Majnun; love is universal. Talking about epic love stories, one of the common themes for them is around travel. The hero, or the heroine, brave opposing families, socio-economic status or religion, and travel to where ones true love is. Sometimes they are too late, which leads to a tragic ending, sometimes the lovers are united forever. Many of my colleagues met their partners and loved ones when they were traveling, and some had to move to a different continent to find love. Many others are in long distance relationships, which mean that they have to travel frequently to meet their partners.

So, to celebrate love, we would like you to tell us about some of the romantic journeys that you have taken in your live. Did you meet your partner when traveling? Have you gone on a romantic trip that was unforgettable? And how did Nokia Maps help you with your journey? You are single? Not to worry; just tell us how some of the epic love stories through the ages would have turned out better if they used Nokia Maps, Nokia Drive, Nokia Public Transport, Nokia Pulse or maps.nokia.com. You can create a podcast or a video that is 2 minutes or less in length, tweet your entry, or write a blog post with maximum 500 words. Once done, you can share it with us either as a comment on this post, or tweet it with the #nokiamaps hash tag.

The competition will be over on February 14^th, at 11:00 pm GMT. We will announce the winners on February 16^th. And what will the winners get, some cool Nokia Maps goodies, and each winner plus a friend will be treated to a great dinner at a nice restaurant in their city. The Nokia Mapstronaut €1000 Discovery Giveaway

The Mapstronaut’s travels are at an end but before he heads off home to outer space, he needs to celebrate something and get rid of a few things he’s picked up along the way. Well, we say a few – we mean a thousand, €1000 to be precise.

Obviously the Mapstronaut doesn’t need €1000 in space, so he has decided to give it to YOU to spend at YOUR favourite place in YOUR city. And what better day to kick it off than the day when Nokia brought us integrated 3D maps?

HOW

All you need to do is find your favourite place. If it’s not there; add it by dragging the ‘add a public place to Maps’ icon to the location and following the prompts. To make things a bit more fun, the Mapstronaut wants you to use his themes…

They are:

1. Shopping : From department stores to mom and pop shops, no place is too big or small for this category. All we need is that you love what you buy from here.

2. Eat & Drink: This could be a Michelin experience, or this could be a road side shack – the only criteria is mouth watering fare or wonderful drinks – the yummiest that money can buy.

3. Going Out: Where do you go to dance the night away, or to listen to some good music, watch a show or enjoy a great movie experience? We want to know!

4. Sights & Museums: What are some of the sights in your city that you think is too good to be missed? Do you have big or small museums in your city that will educate us about the world around us?

5. Wildcard : This is basically anywhere that isn’t covered in the above categories.

Got that? Good. By the way, if you submit places to all 5 themes you’ll be giving yourself a better chance of winning as we’ll be taking only two places from each!

WHAT

The Mapstronaut has specifically told us that when he judges the entries, he’ll favour those that include photos, info and reviews of their chosen place (and bear in mind that he’s after those little hidden secrets, not big tourist attractions!!).

WHEN

The competition starts right now and your entries will be accepted up until 6:00pm GMT on Wednesday 14^th December.

After that, we’ll be taking the best two entries from each theme and throw the voting open to find the overall winner!

Whilst all this is going on, the Mapstronaut will be watching closely and be tweeting from @nokia_connects about the entries that are submitted, giving a shout out to some of his favs. If you have any questions for him, drop him a tweet.

Suggest a place for our Mapstronaut to visit and win!

Nokia Maps. It’s not just about getting from A to B – we think a map is a living, breathing journey that holds the key to your passions. Even if you’re sitting in front of a computer, the world is at your fingertips when you visit Nokia Maps.

So to celebrate the launch of the new Nokia Maps blog, we want to take you on an adventure. We have a Mapstronaut waiting to boldly go where no one has gone before on Nokia Maps and we want you to suggest places for him to visit!

Over the next 10 days, our Mapstronaut will be visiting Rome, Berlin and London to populate Nokia Maps on his maiden voyage. But there are too many places to discover alone – so we need your help…and if you help us, you’ll have the chance to win some amazing prizes. All you need to do is go to Nokia Maps and suggest a place for him to visit in either Rome, Berlin or London. Click on the area you want us to visit and press the blue share button. You need to share the nka.fi short link.

You can share your suggestion via Tweet @nokia_connects, or copy and paste the short link in the comments section of this blog post below.

We can only visit 20 locations in each City. So, to give your suggestion the best chance of being picked, please remember that our Mapstronaut will be selecting locations based on the following criteria:

It has to be based on one of the following passions (and don’t forget to mention which one when you share the link!!) Sports, Music, Food, Fashion, Technology, Entertainment, Art, Travel, Photography, Wildcard Entry (A passion of your choice)
We want it to be unique – so choose places that you think people would like to discover
Finally – we want it to have social appeal – so choose a place that you would like to visit with a friend

For those of you living in the UK, Italy or Germany, there’s an extra chance to win. 10 of the places visited by our Mapstronaut in each City will be suggested by our local fans – so if you suggest a place that he visits (and you live in that country) – you’ll receive a €100 voucher to spend in that place!

You can enter as many times as you like… so there’s plenty of chances to win. We’re opening entries from today – so you can start suggesting places to us right now. Our Mapstronaut lands in Rome next Monday at 9am – so stay tuned on the Nokia Maps blog and @nokia_connects to find out if he visits your suggestion!

Winner of calling all reviewers competition is announced

Hello everyone, when we asked you to add your favorite POIs to maps.nokia.com, we did not expect this level of participation. After a well played round, the votes are now counted, and we have identified the winners. As many of us expected, the winner is JoaoLuis, who will get a lovely Pink N8 on post in a few weeks – whereupon he will give it to his daughter

However, there was also one another user who came second with only seven points less than Joao. We are impressed with his dedication, and the maps team suggested that I give him an upgrade on the gift. So Rohit Sringare will get an N8 as well – but not in Pink, sorry

We have identified the other four who will receive Nokia gifts. You guys did well, however Joao and Rohit were in a different league altogether. Congratulations Zooni, PhaedraV, teo d and Geboi! You will receive some cool stuff from Nokia. Better luck next time!

So how can you too enrich maps like these location stars? Here are some helpful pointers:

Post your own images and text – plagiarism is a no-no. Go out, walk around and keep taking pictures of your surroundings.
Include complete addresses – many people did not get points where the address was not clear.
Include clear and relevant images – many of you did not receive points because the pics were no clear or relevant.
Write clear and relevant reviews – Write down notes on what you liked or disliked when it comes to different places and their services. Many of you did not get points on generic reviews.
Be respectful – of each other and of the process. Disagree respectfully, or you may get disqualified or banned for inappropriate comments.

We will have more competition around location in the future as well. Remember to participate, and keep the conversations respectful.

Calling all reviewers

Are you someone who goes out to dinner and can recall everything that is good, bad and ugly about the experience? Are you someone who loves to take beautiful photographs of the places you visit? Are you someone who knows your neighborhood inside out? Are you someone who travels to exotic locations regularly and love to talk about them to your friends and family?

Then, this competition is for you. You get to tell the entire world about places you love and places you hate – and everything in between. What more, you can win a new Nokia N8 and other goodies.

So how do you participate in the competition?

The competition rules are simple. We start at 12:00 GMT on Monday, July 11, 2011 and close at 12:00 GMT on Monday, July 18th, 2011. The competition is not based on luck, but on merit:

Go to maps.ovi.com and add a review or image of a public place. Or add a new public place to the database.

Each qualified review will get +1 points

Each qualified image will get +1 points

Each new public place added, with a picture and a review, will get + 5 points

To qualify, a review should be coherent, relevant aka it is about the place and the services offered. To qualify, the image (s) should be about the place. Repeat entries with the same image or review will not be considered. Plagiarism will disqualify you from the competition. All reviews, new places and images should be added between 12:00 GMT July 11 and 12:00 GMT July 18.

Once you create a new public place / review / image, please post the link to the comments section below. As the reviews are not connected to the usernames for now, please add your name to the end of the review text. See the image below – by clicking on the circled icon, you will have a ovi.me URL which can be used to share the POI that you created or added a review or a picture to.

As always, please raise your queries, suggestions and feedback also in the comments below.

When we asked you about your thoughts on maps.ovi.com and Ovi Maps, you came up with some amazing entries. It was very difficult for our judges to pick one winner and the runner ups. However, our esteemed judging panel of maps marketers and maps makers unanimously picked one winner, who will get one Pink Nokia N8 and two accompanying Non-Pink ones.

Winner of the Maps 3D architecture competition is announced

During last week, we got many beautiful entries in our search to find out what man made wonder you found most impressive. The entries we received included renaissance architecture to today’s ultra modern ones. Many of you shared buildings that had a personal relevance to you. This competition brought to mind the sheer genius of human race in building something beautiful from scratch. Same as last time, we used a random number generator to pick the winner who will be receiving an N8.

Architecture buffs, win an N8 thanks to 3D maps

One of the great advantages of 3D maps is that you can watch the pretty from the comfort of your couch. Recently I was in San Francisco, and the golden gate bridge was covered in fog – I could not see much of it at all! While moping about my bad luck, I went and looked at it on 3D maps. Here is a screen shot:

So beautiful, isn’t it? And much more real than when I saw it in real life.. which that got me thinking. We humans have made so many elegant architectural marvels over the years. Now thanks to 3D maps, we can enjoy the marvels of 20 cities across the world. With some of them, we can even look at the buildings, bridges, towers and churches at street level.

Hence the theme of our next competition – architecture. How do you enter the competition?

Check out one or more of the 20 cities which are covered by Nokia’s photorealistic 3D maps.
Pick a building/bridge/tower that you think is awesome, except for the Golden Gate Bridge.
Take a screen shot which has the Ovi logo on it somewhere to show that it is indeed from the 3D maps.
Post it on the comments here, or tweet it with the hashtag #OviMaps3D.
To make things a bit more even keeled, you can only post to twitter or comment here with a screenshot only twice every 24 hours.

Winner of the Maps 3D beach competition is announced

During the last week, we got many beautiful entries in our search to find out all the beautiful beaches that you can find on maps.ovi.com/3D. Many of you sent in entries not just from the 20 cities covered in 3D, but also the other parts of the world that you can see on maps.ovi.com/3D , which is the satellite imagery.

Many of you shared beaches that had a personal connection to you. Many of the screen shots you posted brought into attention how beautiful our planet is. However, there can be only one winner. Using a random number generator, a winning entry was picked.

Congratulations, Reinard Julian De Lima!

Reinard won a beautiful N8 which I will be soon shipping to him.

Update: Also, 10 of you will get some Nokia swag from us as a small thank you for your participation.

Me and my colleagues are still finalizing on the swag, but we can promise you one thing : there will be no T-shirts

Nokia wants to know the best beach you have ever seen in 3D maps

Summer is here, and that means it is time to visit the beach! However, many of us are not able to head out there yet - some of us live in cities which are landlocked, making a weekend road trip an impossibility. Or we are still working, and our holiday is not until may be the next month or until the next summer .

That is where Ovi Maps 3D comes in. You can check out the beaches in photo-realistic 3D. What more, if you take a screen shot of the beach that you liked the most on 3D maps and let us know of it by :

Tweeting with the hash-tag #OviMaps3D and then attaching the picture to the tweet

We will let one lucky person win a Nokia N8. Also, the top 10 images selected will win some swag from Nokia, and will have your screenshots saved in OvibyNokia’s online album.

The competition starts from Monday June 6th morning 8:00 GMT and ends on Monday June 13th morning 12 noon GMT. We will announce the winner a few days after the competition ends here in the blog. Remember, we are looking only for the images of the beaches in Ovi Maps 3D that you think are amazing.
