One of the issues that our key users brought up in the event in December was how difficult it was for them to use Map Reporter. They could only report an error based on their current position, or a text address search: there was obviously space for improvements.

But with this latest Map Reporter update, it’s now possible for users to pick a point directly on the map and then report about it. So how to do it, you say? Here are the steps, and a sweet animation explaining the steps.

  1. Activate Map Reporter on your mobile. It shows your current position.
  2. Click on the paper map icon on the top right of the screen. It will take you to the actual map, where the red dot indicates your current position, and the black brackets indicate the currently selected position.
  3. Zoom and scroll to the place that you wish to report. Now, it’s selected within the black bracket.
  4. Click on the tick mark on the upper right of the screen, and you will be taken back to the map reporter interface.
  5. Report about what is the error at this place, and click submit.

And that’s it! One small step for Map Reporter, one giant help for us users.

How do we get the update?

    • http://twitter.com/suryasnair suryasnair

If you already use map reporter, the update should be there now…

I’d like to see something done about the mistakes with POIs such as incorrect locations or the use of ALL CAPS

    • http://twitter.com/suryasnair suryasnair

We are working on making the POIs accurate, meanwhile, please continue giving feedback via Map Reporter.

    Hi Surya,

its really nice to see that customer suggestions are really welcome.
I can remember as I told this idea here at the blog (I’m sure that I wasn’t the only one with this idea) and now this one is implemented into the map reporter functionality…

Thanks so much for listening to the customers…

Its nice to see that our comments are useful.

It is really nice to see this option. It was really painfull to stand in the middle of the road and report the issue and people behind wondering why I stopped. I’ve reported two issues so far, but haven’t heard on them.
How do maps get updated with new roads? I know certain expressways and flyovers have been in use for more than 1 year, but they are not seen in maps. I’m still being directed using the old bylane routes.

  • MARK-1ST

THERE IS NO PINCH TO ZOOM FEATURE IN THE MAPS WHICH OPEN WHEN YOU CLICK THE PAPER MAP ICON, AND THE UPDATE MADE ME LOOSE ALL MAPS STORED ON THE MOBILE.

    • http://twitter.com/suryasnair suryasnair

Hi Mark, there is no pinch to zoom in the Map reporter map. But there is pinch to zoom in the new Ovi Maps version. Updating to the new version of Ovi Maps will also refresh all your map data, so you would need to update to new maps data via OTA uploader or Nokia ovi Suite.

      • Mark-1st

thnkx 4 ur reply. anyway i love ovi maps

        • http://twitter.com/suryasnair suryasnair

          Thank you :)

  • N_ju

Nice improvement, Ovi maps keeps getting better and better!

Another thing that would definitely improve usability is to bring back custom icons for favourites, and also the ability to sort the favourites by name or last accessed.

Cheers, keep up the good work!

    • http://twitter.com/suryasnair suryasnair

Will give the feedback to the maps team!

I wrote this idea when asked improvement to maps, nice to see that there is been activity….

Tried to report an error, but I get the error message, that the service is not available due to technical difficulties. Frustrating.

    • http://twitter.com/suryasnair suryasnair

Oh no! I have reported this instance to the Map Reporter guys in the map team.

  • http://twitter.com/Sleipne Vi Mimir

Cool :) First report posted, however you should improve quickly emerging countries maps (such as Tunisia) at the moment the only useful service is Google Maps on my Nokia :( when I leave France.

  • Bubun_n8

Is there any reporter for reporting wrong navigation/route? I found one in Bangalore, India and I think it might be a common error. near the flyovers.
One of the routes showed, to keep left to get on to the flyover, and then right, and a U-turn after that whereas it was a simple left turn.

  • http://www.welzl.info/ Oskar

BTW – what’s the correct/preferred way to file localisation issues to the maps team in general? Not technical bugs, just things like the German word for “Street” being persistently misspelled throughout the service (strange in a maps application) or when rating a place, the two-star-rating “fair” is translated with the German word for trade show.

    • http://twitter.com/suryasnair suryasnair

As much as I would like to tell you to do something high tech, I would say the easiest way would be if you email me at oviblog@nokia.com and I will send it forward to the maps team.

      • http://www.welzl.info/ Oskar

sorry, but the mail address returns an error (“user unknown”)

  • dimitris

Hi. Can someone help me ? I just bought th N8 and i cannot find the way to insert the number of the street that i want to go to. I can only type the area’s postal code. Can someone help me?

    • Anonymous

can you describe it with more details? What do you want to do?
if you wanna go to a address you already know, you can use the search function in ovi maps.
there is only 1 input field there and you can type all information there. that means, name of the street, number of the street, name of the city…
there are no more seperated fields for the address anymore, that was in the past in older ovi maps versions.

Generally you have different wasy to choose an address as navigation target.
1st: you pick the desired target via map
2nd: you can use the search bar, like i said
3rd: you can navigate to a saved favourite.

these 3 ways to navigate to your destination are available from the main screen, when you choose if you wanna walk or drive to your destination target.

      I hope it worked.

      • dimitris

exactly. The problem is that there is only one field to type all the information. therefore when im typing the street number next to the street, it doesnt recognize it. Just showing some steet options based to the number i’ve inserted. But it thinks i’ve typed the first two or three numbers of a postal code..

Sometimes it is related to the map data. It means that there are areas/countries with very detailed map data and there are areas with less information. Maybe your target street is a very small street?

which ovi maps version is installed on your phone?
3.05 is factory default. you should connect the phone to your computer and update the map data.
I know there was an map data update as i plugged my phone in last week (with ovi maps 3.05).

Other solution could be to install the latest beta version ov ovi maps (v3.06) from betalabs.ovi.com
Don’t be scared, the beta release is stable and gives u more detailed map data (i can only say it from Germany, I don’t know it for other countrie’s map data)

the last clue i can give is:
if something is incorrect or missing on the map, you can report it through map reporter.
see the related icon on the ovi maps main screen…

          • http://twitter.com/suryasnair suryasnair

And when you are typing the street info, have a ‘space’ bw the street name n number. Then it will work.

          • Anonymous

            sure:-)
I assumed that there is a space between name and number :-)

  • dimitris

I have another problem with ovimaps: i’ve managed to input the address but when i tried to save it to one of my contacts, this address seems to be located in Colorado but the truth is that is located to Greece. What’s wrong?

    • http://twitter.com/suryasnair suryasnair

I am not sure. This seems to be a question for the Ovi Care guys, although I also have flagged it internally with the search team.

    • http://twitter.com/suryasnair suryasnair

Hi, can you check your email and reply to me on my follow up emails? Let us get this problem sorted out! :)

      • dimitris

        Everything works perfect now,thanks!

        • dimitris

I must bring this up again. It is happening again ,the exact same thing. I cant trust ovimaps to navigate me ,thats for sure.

          • http://twitter.com/suryasnair suryasnair

You mean it is showing you colarado location for Greece?

          • dimitris

            correct.

          • http://twitter.com/suryasnair suryasnair

Ok. Could you please reply to the emails that I had sent you ( when the problem first happened and also now ).

          • dimitris

i replied. I must add that this problem come and goes. It is not permanent. But i can’t trust ovimamps ,unless this problem completely dissapears.

          • http://twitter.com/suryasnair suryasnair

The developers have added the bug report as a priority ticket, thanks for letting us know of this error and also for the quick reply to my emails.

  • Xs2dani

Are the 3D Landmark options available for India ? I do not seem to find them on my N8?

    • http://twitter.com/suryasnair suryasnair

They are not available for all countries for the time being. Our maps team is working on bringing 3D to more places across the world. We will keep you posted!
